Biographical and Historical Information

The Bathtub Racing Association existed from 1972 to 1992 and was a recognized student organization of the university, falling under the authority of the Dean of Student Activites (at the time it existed, the Association fell under the purview of the Vice President of Student Affairs). The Association organized the Spring and Fall Bathtub Races on campus. The races were cancelled in 1992 due to several years of increasing cost and liability, and decreasing attendance. The cancellation of the races led to the dissolution of the association.

The Bathtub Races were revived in 2010 for the March 27th Alumni Reunion. Unlike the original racers, the new ones did not have motors, for "safety reasons." The top speed of these new racers was approximately 30 miles per hour. The race course also changed into a downhill course with twists and turns much like a luge-style race. In the past, hundred of thousands of tires lined the perimeter of campus to create a Nascar-style track stretching about 1 mile. In the spring, racers would go 75 laps and in the fall, 60.
